Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has held a wide-ranging media briefing in Tehran. He accused the US of perpetrating war crimes in the city of Lamerd on the first day of US-Israel attacks on Iran, saying cluster missiles were used and that 21 civilians, including children and visitors from Afghanistan, were killed, with schools, public facilities and a blood bank affected.
He also said a commercial vessel was targeted near Hengam Island, killing one Iranian, and injuring two others, including Pakistani citizens.
Baghaei confirmed that Saudi Arabia requested the postponement of the planned Oman meeting between Iran and GCC states and said the Iran-Oman agreement on maritime routes is “almost sealed”, with a joint meeting intended to present it to all regional states.
On the Houthi advances in Yemen, he said Iran does not interfere in Yemeni affairs and is not involved in what is unfolding there, describing Ansar Allah Houthis as an independent body making its own decisions.
He rejected reports of an Iranian role in an attack on Saudi Arabia from Iraq as “false” and “baseless” US propaganda aimed at dividing regional countries.
On reports about nuclear facilities at Pickaxe Mountain, he called them part of a “media and psychological warfare” campaign and “baseless, groundless reports”.
He also said Iran can never be isolated, pointing to BRICS support and even US allies such as Canada challenging what he described as Washington’s unipolar order.
